Vintage Spanish Plaza De Toros La Ventas Mounted Bullfighter Linen

This 19” x 31 1/2” linen features a r
ejoneador
(“lancer”) style bull fighter atop his steed facing off against a large bull at the Plaza De Toros La Ventas, which is Spain’s largest bullfighting ring. This piece is likely based on a paper poster commonly used to advertise such events to the public.
One side of tag attached to the lower left corner corner of the back of the piece has "100% algodón” (Spanish for 100% Cotton) and the other side appears to have “boada s.a.”.
The piece has fold lines from being in storage and will be refolded for shipping.

“Rejoneador” (lancer) is the name given to bullfighters who fight bulls on horseback.

Álvaro Domecq y Díez (1917-2005) was fighter pilot during the Spanish Civil War and reintroduced bullfighting on horseback to Spain. He began fighting bulls in the ring at age 17 in 1934. In 1943 he fought over 50 times, joining as afar as Mexico and donating all his fees to charity. He pioneered the practice of artificial insemination to improve his stock of bulls. He retired in 1950 and was followed by a son and grandson in the ring.

GREGORIO SANCHEZ
Gregorio “Gregorio Sánchez” Lozano Sánchez (1927-    ). Some references list his birth year as 1930. After initially working as a bricklayer he appears to made his public debut as a bullfighter in 1952, with further fights in 1953. He fought in Las Ventas first in 1954 and returned four more times. Additional matches were fought in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1960, 1963 and 1970.
PEDRÉS
Pedro o "Pedrés" Martínez González (1932-    ). Later known by the nickname “”, he appears to began his career at a event for novice bullfighters held in his hometown Albacete in October 1949. His career continued to expand in the early 1950s and in 1952 when he appeared in the Coliseum of Valencia with his famous godfather Miguel "Litri" Báez y Espuny (1930-    ). The 1954 season saw him venture to Mexico, Columbia and Peru. Due to overwork he retired from 1955 to 1959 and returned for the 1960 and 1961 seasons. He took the 1962 season off and returned in 1963 and retired in 1965.
ANDRÉS VAZQUEZ
Andrés Vázquez (1936-    ) 1960 debut was made in the small town of Guijuelo. He continued to expand his career throughout the 1960s and appeared at
Las Ventas in 1970. Additional fights are noted for most of the seasons from 1971 to 1981 when he retired.
