Features
This is a video/audio switcher with four inputs and two outputs. Each input and output has RCA stereo audio jacks and both composite (RCA) and S-video jacks. Some of the unique features of this unit include:
Auto input mode: Although this comes with a wireless remote control, you can also place it in auto input mode and the switcher will automatically look for a video signal on the video inputs. Thus, if you turn on a video source unit connected to input 1, the switcher will automatically select this input. If you turn on a second source unit connected to another video input, it will automatically change to the new input. This will occur in both off mode and standby mode, meaning that the unit will turn on and off without requiring you to make any manual selection. This feature may be defeated, if desired.
Composite to S-video conversion: This will convert composite video signals to its outputs as both composite video and S-video signals. This is a huge convenience feature, since it will allow you to make all video connections through the switcher and into the S-video input of a television. When combined with the auto input mode feature, it means that you can switch between up to 4 video sources without having to change your television input. Note that this could also be used in place of the video switching built into a receiver, since very few receivers will allow you to combine composite and S-video inputs (even if both inputs are present on the unit you must normally choose one or the other). Note the following however:
The conversion is for convenience only, the resulting picture will NOT be of S-video quality and may, in some cases, not be as good as the original composite video
The unit will NOT convert S-video into composite, only composite to S-video, so you could not, for example, connect a Hi8 camcorder from it's S-video output and have the switcher output its signal through a composite video output
Volume Stabilizer Adjustment: This feature allows you to control the dynamic range of the currently selected audio signal. When this feature is switched on you can compress the incoming audio signal by up to 10:1, or expand the signal up to 1:2. Compression makes it easier to listen to a recording with large dynamic range at night without bothering others, cut back the volume increase on TV commercials or to listen to music in a noisy environment. It can also be used to record tapes, MiniDisc, etc. that are compressed for use in noisy environments such as a vehicle. Expansion can be used to restore dynamics to poor recordings. Note that as with any other compressor/expander it will not eliminate all volume fluctuation and if not used carefully can actually make audio sound worse. This feature is defeatable.
Dimmer: From remote only, allows you to dim LEDs on unit or turn off all LEDs except for the red power LED, you can cycle through 3 settings (Bright, Dim or OFF)
Controls, inputs and outputs
Front panel:
Power/Standby switch: Turns unit on or places it in standby mode
Power LED: Bright Red when on, dims when in standby mode
Input 1-4 switches and LED: Four switches to select input; each one has an amber LED on top that illuminates when that input is selected.
Auto Input Mode Switch and LED: Turns auto input mode on and off; when on the LED above it illuminates in green.
Volume Stabilization Adjustment: Rotary knob allows you to adjust compression/expansion ratio of audio signal from a maximum compression of 10:1 to a maximum expansion of 1:2.
Volume Stabilization switch and LED: Used to turn Volume Stabilization on and off, when on an LED above the switch illuminates in amber.
Rear panel:
DC input jack: For use with supplied AC adapter
Inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4: Four A/V inputs, each one consisting of stereo RCA audio, composite (RCA) video, and S-video
Outputs 1 and 2: Two A/V outputs, each one consisting of stereo RCA audio, composite (RCA) video, and S-video ; these are two identical outputs with buffers to prevent one output from loading the other
Remote Buttons
Power: On/off switch
Display: Cycles through normal, dim or off for LED illumination
VS Active: Turns volume stabilization on or off
Auto Input: Turns Auto Input mode on and off
Input 1-4 buttons: Four buttons to select input 1, 2, 3 or 4
