I own an advertising specialty company - now in our 42nd year I am happy to report - and worked in the industry for many years prior to establishing my own firm. Over the years we produced many unusual advertising items and collected a wide array of specialty samples. We are now in semi-retirement and offering much of that collection on eBay.Among my better suppliers was and still is the Parker Pen Company, manufacturer of fine writing instruments.
In the mid 1980's Parker wanted to broaden their line and create a more contemporary looking writing instrument. The result was the Vector, a distinctive style even still produced today.
To further broaden the Vector line, for a brief period it was marketed in a gift set that included a writing pad. This product was primarily geared towards the advertising specialty industry. We could imprint both the Vector instrument as well as custom imprint the pad and even packaging top. Unfortunately the gift set was not very popular and I don't recall it lasting very long.
Here is a sample gift set I have had since then, and while it is probably close to 30 years old, it is in virtually as new condition - other than the refill would need to be replaced should you decide to actually write with it. However, I think most collectors prefer to keep in in original condition, refill and all.
My sample features a distinctive multi-color Jergens logo on a white barrel. In addition to the logo on the barrel, the logo is also included on the very top of the cap.
That was an optional imprint area, and my sample kit wanted to show it off.
The copy reads: Jergens Aloe & Lanolin", and has chrome trim. The instrument is a roller ball, ans as noted, a new refill is needed to use it rather than collect.
The set is gift boxed in special packaging related to the union. It is a see-thru box so a companies logo will show through.
An excellent gift for a collector of Parker pens or other related memorabilia.
As an aside, a final Parker related story - I worked my way through college as the shipping and receiving clerk for a well known specialty advertising distributor. As I was preparing to graduate with a BBA in marketing, I was contacted by the national sales manager for Parker, located in Janesville, WI. He was an outstanding gentleman named Russ F., and looking for a Southeast U.S. rep. He came to Atlanta on a multi-prong business trip, and while here invited me to dinner at a quality downtown restaurant. We discussed the possibility of employment and he offered me the job as S.E. rep when I graduated. I accepted, but unfortunately Uncle Sam had other plans. In 1969, shortly before graduating, the draft lottery was instituted. The very first birthday drawn was mine - Sept. 14th!
I realized I would be soon losing my student deferment and reclassified 1A and immediately drafted upon graduation. I instead volunteered under the OCS College Option program. Although it meant entering the Army as a private, it afforded me the opportunity to eventually attend OCS to have the chance to become an officer. I did and ended up serving a tour in Vietnam as a Combat Engineering Platoon Leader. After discharge I returned to work with the gentleman who was my mentor, eventually becoming V.P. of the company - before starting my own business. I often wonder what a different path my life would have taken had I not been "encouraged" to enter the military, but instead worked as a traveling Parker Pen salesman...
I have additional Parker instruments and kits - and other suppliers such as Cross, Sheaffer, etc.- listed as well...assuming they are not yet sold.
