Trilobite is 3.5 inches long!
This is an excellent specimen of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) punctatus from the Ordovician of Russia. This large trilobite is extremely well articulated and is almost perfectly prone. The bug is quite inflated and very symmetrical in appearance. Note the large, stalked eyes - a defining feature of this species. The rich, caramel-brown color of the trilobite contrasts wonderfully with the cream-colored matrix. The distinct fossil is well showcased on the large limestone block that also contains an Echinosphaerites cystoid. And this trilobite was prepared from a cross-section - it has not been composted or "created" like many Russian trilobites. This is a beautiful example of this classic stalk-eyed trilobite from Russia.
