A story in
Time
magazine's June 21, 1963 edition described how the San Antonio Savings Association had "cashed in on convenience" by opening branches inside local Handy-Andy supermarkets, "right among the soap and spinach."
In the late 1980s San Antonio Savings was seized by regulators because of shortfalls in its loan portfolio, blamed on problems in the Texas economy. It was taken over shortly thereafter by an investment group headed by the financier Ronald O. Perelman.
